Prepare the facts first
Start with your contact details, relevant education, work or project experience, and skills you can explain in an interview. Keep a note of dates and achievements before choosing a design. The most useful resume is one that makes your relevant experience easy to find.
For a first job, college projects, internships, volunteering and practical coursework can demonstrate what you have done. Describe your own contribution. Avoid inventing employers, qualifications, metrics or responsibilities just to fill a template.
Choose a layout for the destination
Open the Resume Builder and use its template preview to choose a layout. A simple layout with clear headings is a useful starting point for an online application. A more visual design may suit a portfolio or a direct conversation with a recruiter, depending on the role.
Use consistent dates, readable type and enough space between sections. Keep important contact details as readable text. Follow the employer's requested file format; a attractive PDF is not a reason to ignore a request for a Word file.
Write specific, truthful descriptions
Explain what you did and why it mattered. Instead of only listing 'teamwork', describe the project, your responsibility and the outcome. Use numbers when you genuinely know them. If you do not have a measured result, a precise description is better than a made-up percentage.
For example: 'Created a spreadsheet to track weekly stock checks for a college event' describes useful work without claiming an unsupported result. Reorder sections so the strongest relevant evidence appears early. A short summary is optional; use it only when it adds information.
Review and keep your own backup
Check the live preview after changing spacing, fonts or section order. Before sending, download the file and open it separately. Check page breaks, headings, spelling, contact details and whether text can be selected and copied in a sensible order.
Browser-saved versions are stored on this device and are not a cloud backup. Export a backup of your work and keep the finished document somewhere you control. Resume software cannot guarantee that a hiring system will parse every design or that an application will succeed. Review the employer's instructions for each application.
