GST inclusive and exclusive: understand the difference

Work through an example of adding GST to a base price and extracting it from an inclusive total.

Written by ToolSaathi · Updated 6 October 2026

First decide what your amount means

A GST-exclusive amount is a base price before the selected tax is added. A GST-inclusive amount already contains the selected tax. These are different starting points, so the same percentage cannot simply be added or subtracted in both cases.

The GST calculator performs arithmetic using the amount, rate and mode you choose. It does not determine the legally applicable rate for a product or service, registration requirements, exemptions, input tax credit or every invoicing rule. Confirm those separately against current official information or a tax professional.

Add GST to an exclusive amount

For an illustrative base price of ₹1,000 and a selected example rate of 18%, GST is ₹1,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹180. The total is ₹1,180. The 18% rate here is only an example, not a recommendation for any particular supply.

In general, tax = base amount × rate ÷ 100. Total = base amount + tax. Select the exclusive mode when the number you have is the base price before GST.

Extract GST from an inclusive amount

For an inclusive total of ₹1,180 at the same example rate of 18%, the base is ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000. GST is the difference between the total and the base: ₹180. Subtracting 18% directly from ₹1,180 would produce the wrong base.

In general, base = inclusive total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). Tax = inclusive total − base. Select the inclusive mode when your receipt or quoted total already contains the selected GST.

Check before using the result

Make sure the selected rate is appropriate and that the amount is inclusive or exclusive as intended. Verify rounding against the actual invoice. A displayed CGST/SGST or IGST breakdown is an arithmetic illustration; the applicable treatment depends on the transaction and current law.

Money tools are labelled Beta 1 because mistakes and missing cases are possible. Ask a qualified tax professional before using a result for a filing or an important business decision.
